Why are Japanese brands labelled as "boring," while Western minimalism is given a pass? My thoughts on algorithm-driven taste, lack of effort, and the disconnect between passion and content.
Your point about luxury brands having chokehold on people is well said. Though - I think its not only because people assume craft and quality from them - its also because people are looking for the highest signaling value. "Why pay so much money for some brand not everyine knows about????"
I wasn’t trying to critique the brands themselves so much as examine their audience and the almost cult-like reverence for what are, on the surface, fairly understated garments. Based on Auralee’s aesthetic, I doubt the designer ever intended to cultivate a hype-adjacent, status-driven following. Many men gravitate toward these brands because they feel “safe” — easy to wear, and validated by the fact that tastemakers have deemed them cool.
i think a lot of the discourse can be boiled down to people don’t want to shop smart - they want to buy right away and be perceived as cool right away. combine that with influencers just engagement baiting with hot takes every video and the nuance is just completely lost

I actually think that's the main reason.
